When I asked a fellow guest from Germany how they'd discovered Finca Malvasia she told me she had entered the search term ‘mystical holiday destination’ into Google and Finca was top of the list.

Where is it?

The Spanish island of Lanzarote is one of the Canary Islands sprinkled in the Atlantic Ocean a few hundred kilometres off the coast of Morocco. Finca Malvasia is near the centre of the island and sits in a lovely rural valley known as La Geria wine region, surrounded by blackened volcanic hills. It’s about a ten-mile drive to the nearest beaches and a simple 15-20 minute drive from the airport in Arrecife, so getting around is easy.

Style

The family-owned property is a collection of small self-catering apartments that sit around a shared pool and gardens and a larger main house that has three bedrooms and a private pool. The elegant complex has been built in the style of local artist César Manrique, bringing inside and outside environments together to create a wonderful sense of space.

Manrique’s art made its mark nationally and internationally at the end of the 20th century and Lanzarote was lucky to have such an aesthetically minded son. During a period when other parts of Spain were throwing up huge high-rise tourist monstrosities the local artist lobbied hard for sympathetic development on his home island. The property is in keeping with that sense of style and sits within a working vineyard in a beautiful, remote and rugged valley.

Facilities

My wife and I were travelling with my parents. Although he can walk, my father is not very mobile so it was important for us to be in a property that was simple for him to navigate and where all the facilities were easy to access. The four of us stayed in the main house called ‘La Finca’ and we had plenty of space. Although the property wasn’t setup for wheelchair access its open-plan living quarters and lovely gardens made things straightforward for Dad.

The house’s outdoor space, with its fantastic porch and limitless views, reminded me of ranches I had visited in California over the years. The island has year-round sunshine so even in winter we were able to sit outside during the day and enjoy the natural expanse around us. In the evening we cooked outdoors and when it became chilly we could warm ourselves indoors with the wood-burner.

If you are looking for pubs and neon, this is not the place for you. If, on the other hand, it is solitude you are looking for, you’re in luck. The silence added to a wonderfully relaxing environment. The only drawback is that you’ll definitely need a car as the villa is somewhat off the beaten track.

Food & Drink

The accommodation is self-catering and the facilities are simple and easy to use. The kitchen in the main house was what could be described as ‘shabby chic’ and may not be to everyone’s taste. But we liked it. The BBQ was in a great spot near the pool and outdoor dining area. And the local shops (stocking everything you may need from firewood to fresh fish) are a few minutes drive away.

Which room?

The open plan living space in the main house has a wonderful charm and is very private.

Extra Curricular

The island has an incredible natural habitat that is defined by its volcanic history. Visitors can take guided tours or simply explore the unique environment. Artist César Manrique’s home has been converted into a museum and is well worth a visit.

Lanzarote is also renowned for being an outdoor sports enthusiast’s playground. I surfed Famara beach on a daily basis and the local surfers were very friendly. The surf-shops accommodate all levels. Next time I’ll try the golf course. There are also bikes, hang-gliders, runners and kite surfers all across the island. Worth noting that the Club La Santa Ironman Lanzarote is known as one of the toughest Ironman races in the world, so there is a very ‘active’ vibe if you want to find it.

Best for:

Relaxing, reading and sitting by the pool.

When to go?

Any time of the year. We went in winter and the sunshine was lovely (between 22 and 26 degrees Celsius). I’m told it gets hotter (but not too much hotter) during the summer months, but I’d love to go back and try it out then too.

What do locals eat and drink in Lanzarote?

Despite being known as a holiday destination, Lanzarote is ultimately a farming community with a rich history of growing some amazing produce and cultivating the now sort after wines by harnessing a unique climate and soil that make it a great place to grow wine grapes. The most popular grape variety in Lanzarote which makes up for the vast majority of wines is Malvasia Volcanica, which produces white wines that are light, fruity, and delicious.

When it comes to pairing wine with food in Lanzarote, the local cuisine is a great place to start. Lanzarote is known for its fresh seafood, such as grilled BBQ fish, octopus, and squid, which pairs well with the island's white wines. Additionally, the island's goat and sheep cheese, which is often served with honey and almonds, is a perfect match for the fruity and acidic white wines.

Being by the sea, Lanzarote has a wealth of local fish and seafood however, one dish that is a sort of locals secret are Gambas La Santa - a small super sweet prawn fished off the wild west coast of Lanzarote more famed for surfing than seafood. Fishermen supply the local restaurants with Gambas La Santa when conditions are good for fishing and if they're available locals will definitely order them while on offer. Served grilled on a bed of hot Lanzarote salt all they need is a squeeze of fresh lemon and they're delicious.

Another traditional and very popular dish in Lanzarote is papas arrugadas or Canarian potatoes, which are small, salted new potatoes boiled in saltwater until the skins go wrinkly and served with a duo of sauces called Mojo. Red Mojo is made with chilli and is rich and fiery while green mojo is made with green herbs, garlic and sometimes avocado for a more subtle option. Mojo varies wherever you order it and is usually based on the family recipe of whoever is making and serving it.

Meat wise, although you can get a wide variety of meat mainly from Mainland Spain or South America, Goat and Rabbit are the traditional local staples. Both were introduced to the Island by the Spanish as a hardy source of protein and traditional dishes vary from stews, grilled bbq options, slow cooked braised joints and soups with chickpeas and lentils. Super good comfort food if you have had a few too many Vinos!

The very popular farmers market on Saturday in the capital Arrecife and on Sunday in Macher Blanca provide the perfect opportunity to buy local produce direct from the growers and makers to cook yourself. A huge array of fruit and vegetables, local cheeses, bread and cakes are on offer as well as fresh juices to quench your thirst while you shop. Sunday in Macher Blanca has a great 'Siciodad' or social centre where they make many of the dishes previously discussed and is a super place to have a post market drink and tapas.

Timanfaya National Park is a breathtaking natural wonder located in the Southwest of Lanzarote. It is a unique landscape that combines a volcanic environment with an otherworldly appearance. The park was declared a protected area in 1974, and since then, it has been preserved and maintained to showcase the unique volcanic landscape of the island. La Santa is known for its great surf spots in Lanzarote. Here are some popular spots on the West coast:

El Quemao: Often compared to Pipeline in Hawaii and home to the annual Billabong Quemao Class surf competition, this world-renowned left-hand reef break is known for its heavy barrels on big swells and SE winds. It's only recommended for advanced surfers due to its challenging conditions, shallow lava rock reef and powerful barrelling waves.

The Right or Morro Negro: A right hand reef break that works best on a low to mid tide with a north swell. It's a powerful right-hand point break wave that's suitable for intermediate to advanced surfers.

Lanzarote, a paradise for Mountain Bikers

Lanzarote is a mesh of interlinked trails and mountain paths that zig zag from coast to coast. Regardless of your ability, Lanzarote has something for you from Long endurance trails, rocky paths, large run offs where water has carved large stone crevasses into volcanoes, sandy trails and much more. If you fancy something a little less extreme we recommend the mostly flat costal path along the south coast.

If racing is your thing then there's many race events each year of varying length and styles so have a good look on google to find organised events. The island is also very well documented with trails easily identifiable on GPS and published by enthusiasts.

Geographically the south and middle are relatively flat however, a short drive or ride north and you'll find much more mountainous conditions, big climbs and fast dry descents are to be expected. This area is popular with the Downhill MTB crowd.

Museo Atlantico - The underwater museum in Lanzarote

Beneath the waters of the South coast of Lanzarote lies a very special art installation created by renowned British artist Jason deCaires Taylor

The Museo Atlántico, a large-scale artificial sculpture reef, is now finished and comprises of ten separate groups of sculptures. The Rubicon is a collection of 35 people moving in a direction of a wall with many Lanzarote residents serving as the sculptures' models. The renowned Raft of Lampedusa, which alludes to the present migration situation, is also visible. Los Jolateros, a group of kids on tiny brass boats, is another element. There are also other sculptures that are half human, half cactus, and show how nature and mankind can coexist harmoniously. The sculptures of a couple taking a selfie and a few photographers make reference to technology's use in contemporary culture.

On a swing and a seesaw on the playground known as "Deregulated," businesspeople in suits can be seen. The final piece is a human gyre made up of 200 life-size sculptures that are arranged in an endless circle.

The collection of statues is situated in a sheltered area near Coloradas, Playa Blanca at a depth of 12 to 15 metres. A trip to the Museo Atlántico is a magical experience that, perhaps, will help people appreciate and love our aquatic environment more.

Cast against the backdrop of an imposing volcanic crater, on a working vineyard in the La Geria region, the low-lying whitewashed buildings of Finca Malvasia prove welcome refuge from the windy elements. I am staying in one of the five apartments, in which the British owners, Tarnya and Richard Norse-Evans, have combined simple, contemporary monochrome decoration with locally crafted terracotta pots and straw baskets. Most impressive is the bathroom, with its volcanic stone wall and indoor cactus garden. I tuck into a welcome platter of cured meats and manchego, with membrillo and mojo, the Canarian sauce.

Later, and when the wind has thankfully subsided, I head off to experience the moon-scape isle. From the volcanic south to the lusher north, Lanzarote’s unique landscape is searingly – sometimes starkly - beautiful, and is captured in a series of public spaces designed by the island’s homegrown abstract painter, sculptor and architect, César Manrique. Each of these sites is different and all are extraordinary.

Turquoise waters, golden sand and a reef full of marine life

Papagayo beach is one of several coves located on the southwest tip of Lanzarote and is a sight to behold. Its golden sandy beach, crystal clear water and great beach restaurant (Chiringuito) make it a fave with locals and holiday makers.

Papagayo beach is located about 20 minutes from Finca Malvasia. The drive south is spectacular, first passing through the La Geria wine region, up and over the volcanos through Femes before descending down to the south coast where you will find the entrance to the protected area of Papagayo.

The area around Papagayo has several golden sandy beaches of varying size all sheltered by volcanic rock formations in small coves. Once in the ocean, you can experience the volcanic reef where Lava once spilled into the sea and is now home to various marine life.

The vibe here is laid back, the beaches are protected from Atlantic swells and swimming and snorkelling are the activity of choice. We always take a big bag of old bread to release it into the water and wait for the fish to surround you while you snorkel.

On the cliff side you can take in the view, sip a cold drink in the Chiringuito or grab a bite to eat. Fresh fish and tapas are on offer and the sunset here is second to none.

Lanzarote — where nature meets design - By Helen Ochyra

Away from resorts, the island is an oasis of cool design, and it’s all thanks to Cesar Manrique

Michael Palin has a lot to answer for. That is what I think as I sit beneath a giant eucalyptus tree on the terrace of Bodegas Rubicon winery, sipping a crisp glass of local white, eyes wandering across a 360-degree monochrome landscape.

Looking at the miles of ebony soil interrupted only by half-moon drystone walls to protect the vines, marching from volcano to volcano, and powder-white bodegas, I fail to see how Palin once dubbed this gorgeous island “Lanzagrotty”.

Lanzarote is without doubt the chicest of the Canary Islands and its protection from the rampant tourist development that has blighted parts of some of its neighbours is largely down to one man.

César Manrique was born in the island capital of Arrecife one hundred years ago this April. He was an artist, an architect, an imaginative designer, and a passionate advocate of the aesthetic. It is down to Manrique that Lanzarote has laws against advertising hoardings, high-rise buildings and even against painting your house any colour besides white.

Human intervention in the landscape is so often negative, but here on Lanzarote every house is as low-rise and as pale as a sugar cube, and the contrast between their white and nature’s black is what makes Lanzarote feel chic. Because monochrome is always chic.

It is only interrupted here by the paintwork around the doors and windows: in the island’s interior a dark green, on the coast an azure blue. That was another rule put in place by Manrique.

Manrique did not just tell people what they could not do, however, he also created many of the island’s top attractions. First port of call on my Manrique trail is his Jardin de Cactus (Cactus Garden), sculpted from the bowels of a disused quarry in 1990.

Here I step into a world where plants rule. Taller by far than the humans strolling around them, the cacti tower above the black lava pathways, creating a maze that has no centre. Some of the plants appear as wild and untamed as an alien species bent on overtaking the landscape; others stand in geometric formation, as perfectly put together as a work of art.

The garden is an easy stop-off en route north, to the site that was Manrique’s first masterpiece, the Jameos del Agua. This lava tube turned restaurant and concert venue was formed in fire and fury, by the eruption of La Corona volcano some 4,000 years ago and the subsequent lava flow into the Atlantic.

Nature may have provided the canvas, but in the 1960s it was Manrique who sculpted this dramatic landscape into something truly beautiful.

Entering the tube, I descend a flight of lava steps and find myself in a restaurant unlike any other. Chunky wooden chairs tempt me to sit and order coffee, my eyes drawn from the domed dark lava ceiling to the brilliant white of the curved bar. Monochrome once again. Above my head a huge plant, hanging like a chandelier, drips slowly from the earlier rain, and below me and farther along the lava tube a pool of water reflects the sun and an image of it all.

The highlight here, though, is the auditorium and I return by night to listen to live music, the bass reverberating in waves around the curve of lava at the tube’s farthest end. Dozens of us sit in awed silence as those on stage fill nature’s cavern with piano and violin and French horn; humans once again enhancing nature.

The next day I return to the island’s north, keen to check out a bar that in pictures appears to be every inch the James Bond lair. Manrique built the Mirador del Rio to make the most of the view across the water of Lanzarote’s neighbour La Graciosa.

This car-free near-desert island is a haven for hikers and cyclists, but it is best seen from above, atop the cliffs of the Risco de Famara — and with gin and tonic in hand. Here I get lucky and nab a window seat, staring straight out through circular windows carved out of Manrique’s signature white walls. It is on my way upstairs to the exterior balcony, however, that I find my favourite viewpoint, a small oval-shaped window that perfectly captures the collapsed pyramid of La Corona, epicentre of so much destruction, now tamed by Manrique to fit within a frame.

Close to the Jameos and the Mirador is the house in which Manrique was living when he died. It is here that I really start to understand the impact that he had on the island he loved, because everything in the Casa Museo César Manrique is perfectly designed.

There are so many places I want to sit — by the pool on chairs as spherical and orange as a tangerine, in the living room on squishy sofas that face the lava-built fireplace, and certainly in Manrique’s sunken bathtub, surrounded by windows that look out on to dark volcanic rock and burgeoning emerald plantlife.

After poking around his home I begin to see Manrique’s influence everywhere — especially in my accommodation. I may not be allowed to sit next to Manrique’s pool, but at Finca Malvasia I have the run of the place. Here there are five self catering apartments arranged round a pool that is just as sculptural and inviting as those I have seen in Manrique’s designs.

When I first moved to Lanzarote, surf was the reason I went into the ocean, after all it’s what bought us here in the first place. However in recent years I’ve been open water swimming as both a a fitness practice but also its a very mediative practice that helps with all sorts of mental wellbeing.

Open water swimming of late has become quite trendy however, its not something new to Lanzarote. We have some wonderful places to immerse yourself and the world famous Iron Man competition happens here every May with hundreds of competitors taking to the waters of the south coast. The early morning start is quite something to to see.

If you haven’t tried open water swimming I’d very much recommend having a go. If you want some advice and guidance we have a great friend Paul who owns and runs Lavaflow Surf School who aside from teaching people to surf he also teaches Beach Lifeguard courses and open water swim coaching.

Lanzarote has a wealth of options for a day out while on holiday. In this post we aim to show you what locals do and where they go.

Start your day with a wonderful breakfast on your terrace at Finca Malvasia. You can make your own or our local bakery has everything you could wish for when it comes to breakfast. All home baked, they provide a great selection of fresh bread, croissants, filled sandwiches and rolls, homemade Spanish tortilla, fresh Spanish orange juice and more. Just 5 minutes away you can pick up and relax looking over the Vines and Volcanoes back at the Finca.

Pack up a beach bag and get on the road to the local Farmers Market at Mancha Blanca. The historic church is open for service if you wish and the market is open selling wonderful fruit, vegetables, cheese, bread, cakes, pastries, wines etc. Its a great place to gather all the ingredients for a great beach picnic lunch.

Once you’re stocked up with all your goodies head to one of Lanzarote’s wonderful golden sandy beaches. Famara is a good choice and certainly where locals head. Famara is known for its surf community and its huge imposing cliffs and long sandy beach that will certainly impress. The vibe here is surf action, beach football or just pure relaxation. You can rent a surf board in the village and take to the waves or just read your book and people watch while you picnic.

Later in the day if you’ve had enough sun, the Village of Caleta De Famara offers some great post beach options. Le Mar Cafe owned by Tommy a local surfer who grew up in Famara offers great drinks and cocktails, Poke bowls, healthy salads and burgers.

Alternatively, there’s a great Chiringuito (beach bar) where you can sit with your feet in the sand and eat fresh fish or relax with a G&T.

On your way home, probably very tired, you’ll be driving back into the sunset as you head back to Finca Malvasia for a dip in the pool!

Built to support the island against Pirate attacks in the 18th century. The museum was opened in 1976 under the supervision of Cesar Manrique after an extensive renovation and restoration project. The building now houses the Museo de Arte Contemporaneo. There’s also the castle restaurant downstairs, with large glass windows framing Arrecifes port. We refer to it as the James Bond restaurant, with funky black tulip chairs and waiting staff in their 1970’s uniforms. Perefect mid-century spot to enjoy a G&T! Stunning views over Arrecife harbour too.

Cesar Manrique - inspirational architect, artist, sculptor and designer

The islands renowned artist, conservationist & aesthetic hero, César Manrique. César Manrique (1919-1992) was born in Arrecife, on an island on which his artistic career left an indelible mark. Following several years in the mainland and New York, he returned indefinitely to Lanzarote in 1996. His creative works can be found all over the island and his commitment to the preservation of the environment, the traditional architecture of the island and to keep tourism in check was and remains second to none. He promoted a model for sustainability in an attempt to protect the islands natural and cultural heritage, this model was a fundamental factor in Lanzarote being declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1993. Tip If you are planning to visit all of the Manrique installations you would be wise to purchase a block ticket as this offers a saving as opposed to purchasing individual tickets for each installation.

Finca Malvasia design references the style of Cesar Manrique, he is a true mid century legend and we will continue to honour his legacy at Finca Malvasia.

On Sundays, (our weekly shopping ritual!) is the small farmers market in Mancha Blanca from 10 to 2pm. It’s ideal for seeing the Canarian way of life. Set in the sleepy village of Mancha Blanca opposite the church, is a small selection of market stalls selling a range of locally grown and organic produce. You’ll find a few artisan stalls selling local wine, liquors, jams, chutneys, bread, cakes, a variety of local goats cheese, flowers, fresh herbs, eggs, pulses together with a variety of locally grown fresh fruit and vegetables. The summer season watermelons and strawberries are a must! Here you will also find a sociedad (social centre) serving coffee, beers and wines together with the menu of local tapas and main meals. A perfect spot to sit back and watch Canarian life. It gets busy from 11am onwards. The sociedad also has a play park for the little ones if they get a little bored with the food shopping! La Vegueta and to the south of Tinajo. Only a 10 minute drive from Finca Malvasia. Finca Malvasia - Unique Wines and Vines

The cultivation of wine on Lanzarote is something else, some might think impossible.

The major volcanic eruptions which took place around the 1730 's had a major impact on the agricultural ways of Lanzarote life. Grain production had been the main staple of the island agricultural production but with at least a third of the island now covered in lava, the farmers had to look for new ways to cultivate the land.

They turned their attention to wine cultivation. Many thought it would be impossible. Instead, they pressed on, developing more unique and now traditional methods of cultivation.

Single vines are planted in ‘picon’ pits (crushed volcanic ash) about four to five metres wide and one to two metres deep, semi-circular stone walls are placed around each pit. These are called Zocos and can be witnessed across the La Geria wine region. The two main varieties grown on the island are Malvasia, a small sweet green grape and Moscatel, which is the larger of the two and used to make beautiful sweet dessert wine. Across the island, the wine production industry employs around 1,500 people and collectively Lanzarote produces an average of 1.5 million litres of wine annually. Many of the Bodegas along the main La Geria road invite you in to sample the fruits of their labour.

Wine at Finca Malvasia

Finca Malvasia is a working vineyard of 20,000 square metres in the heart of the La Geria wine region. Finca Malvasia produces on average 7,000 kilos of grapes per year. The grapes grown here are sold to the local Vega De Yuco bodega - one of the finest wine producers on the island. Bottles of Vega De Yuco can be ordered for guests to enjoy on arrival. Harvest time takes place in early August, it's a labour intensive time as all the grapes are hand picked.

Marvel at Caldera de los Cuervos

Natural wonder and film set, this volcano is stunning...

Caldera de los Cuervos, is a striking location in the Timanfaya National Park. A hike through this region is essential if you enjoy the outdoors and wish to explore the island's wilder areas. Caldera de los Cuervos was recently one of the sets for the Marvel film, The Erternals when Hollywood descended on the Islands for a few months of filming.

All ages can participate here, a circular 3 kilometres long path on flat ground makes it very accessible without long treks or climbs. As you circle the spectacular Volcán del Cuervo, you'll stroll through a sizeable volcanic landscape known as a malpa. At one side there is an entrance where you can access the inside of the volcano and look up to the sky through the full crater.

Lanzarote has an amazing sub aqua volcanic landscape to explore.

Scuba diving, free diving or just snorkelling in Lanzarote reveals an underwater landscape of pure amazement.

The island is surrounded by volcanic reefs where lava spilled into the sea of centuries leaving a fantastic habitat for many types of marine animals. Many types of local fish, Bass, Parrot fish, Rays, Angel Sharks, Tuna, Barracuda are just some of the options you can catch a glimpse at. If you look really hard Octopus and Sea Horses are also making a life for themselves in the reef.

On a recent free diving session Joss and I saw a pretty spectacular site indeed. I dived down to the sea bed and just before I touch the sand a huge ray, I estimate was about 2 metres in size, emerged from the sand and flapped its wings to swim away from me! I’m not sure who was the most surprised, the ray or myself!

A top tip for seeing the wildlife in the sea if to take a plastic bag of broken up stale bread into the water with you, release the bread into the sea and wait for the fish to notice!

Scuba diving is also available via our dive school partner and we’ll do another blog post specifically about Scuba soon.

Restaurante El Tenique - The locals hangout where you’ll always eat well!

We discovered El Tenique about 17 years ago prior to moving here ourselves. We visited Lanzarote with some friends to celebrate New Year Eve and so on New Years Day, feeling somewhat hungover from the previous nights festivities we went in search of a good lunch and purely by accident we stumbled across El Tenique.

Orlando, the owner greeted us at the door and welcomed us onto the large outside terrace which provides both shade and a wonderful view across the countryside. Its a very traditional restaurant and is mainly frequented by locals, especially at the weekend.

El Tenique is a Parilla or BBQ based Restaurante serving all sorts of wonderful options many of which are cooked over wood and coal. 17 years ago (feeling a little under the weather) we opted for a goat stew which is about as Canarian as it gets. Soft slow cooked pieces of meat, carrots and potatoes in a loverly sauce - just what the doctor ordered!

We’ve been eating at El Tenique ever since and it’s become a firm favourite with our guests who love the grilled fresh fish, big steaks, local prawns, fresh salads and much more.

Best places in Lanzarote to enjoy fantastic a sundowner

Sunsets over the West coast of Lanzarote are spectacular especially at Finca Malvasia which looks west toward the Timanfaya National Park. However if you fancy something a little bit further from the Finca, check out the following spots for a sunset tipple and nibble !

Las Dunas, Famara
Las Dunas is a great modern Canarian restaurant in Famara with and elevated position overlooking Famara Beach and out on to the outer island of La Graciosa. Very good cocktail list, lots of Gins to take your fancy or just a local vino or cerveza fit the bill, maybe stay and have dinner! INSIDER TIP: Great fish here, cooked to perfection, modern presentation.

El Chupadero

El Chupadero is a classic spot for a sundowner due to its position in the La Geria wine region facing directly west and looking over the Timanfaya National Park. They offer a great menu of Canarian Tapas, so if you fancy a snack of bubbling hot Albondigas (Spanish meat balls) or a simple plate of local cheese El Chupadero is a winner. INSIDER TIP: Here you can get a wonderful local sweet Moscatel wine served with and orange slice. Wonderful with cheese or dessert...

El Golfo
Famous for its fish restaurants, the village of El Golfo is a must see stop off on the wild South West Coast of Lanzarote. We recommend Restaurante Mar Azul to guests but they're all pretty good to be honest. Simple dishes of fresh fish served with Canarian potatoes and Mojo ( a spicy Canarian sauce). Here you can look directly out to sea as the Sun sets on the horizon. INSIDER TIP: Range Rover, Porsche, Bentley are just a few of the names who have made TV commercials on the long windy lava sided roads of El Golfo so you can imagine you're in a car commercial on your travels.

Mirador Del Rio
Cesar Manrique was responsible for creating Mirador del Rio as well as other architectural installations across Lanzarote. Mirador (look out point) del Rio overlooks the Atlantic channel or Rio between Lanzarote and the Island of La Graciosa. High up on Famara cliffs, it makes for a great sunset spot as the light sets over the outer Islands, most of which are uninhabited nature reserves. INSIDER. TIP: Take a day ferry to from Orzola village to Caleta De Sebo on La Graciosa, great day out, 25 minute boat ride to and unspoilt fishing village, lovely swimming and good food.

Chiringuito Tropical

We discovered Chiringuito Tropical while having a weekend away in the South of Lanzarote. Located in the very west side of Playa Blanca and right on the seafront, it's a perfect place to go and swim, drink, eat, repeat! Super simple Chiringuito (beach bar) with friendly staff and great food. They have list of Paellas with 6 or 7 different ingredients combinations, Zamboriñas con Kimchi (small grilled scallops with kimchi dressing) and they also produce their own Gin. Perfect for a sunset gastro experience! INSIDER TIP: Definitely book a table at the weekends.

Best surf spots in Lanzarote

Tarnya and I moved from the UK to Lanzarote more than 15 years ago. Having spent many holiday trips here, I had a primary reason for visiting, SURF...

Here in Lanzarote the surf scene is pretty small and focussed around a number of well known and respected reef breaks. El Quemao is probably the most revered for its shallow barreling waves breaking over lava rock that is frequently compared to the hugely famous Banzai Pipeline in Oahu, Hawaii. In fact Lanzarote is also known as the Hawaii of Europe. The annual invite only surf competition, Quemao Class is held here and makes for some spectacular footage:

Having said this, you don't have to be Kelly Slater to enjoy riding waves here. Lanzarote has a wealth of options from heavy reefs to mellow beach breaks. La Santa and Famara are the two hotspots but Lanzarote has many more options too. For intermediate & advanced riders there are many reef breaks to get your teeth into and La Santa is the most well known, home to rights and left and also home to El Quemao.

Famara is known more for its kilometres of long golden sandy beach breaks, surf schools and mellower surf - Also good for those who don't surf to hang out in the sunshine with a good book! However, Famara can offer up some heavy surf when the swell size increases and also has some surrounding reef breaks such as San Juan, an amazing a frame peak with a long left and short right.

A blessing for surf options is that Lanzarote is long and narrow so you can move around west, north and east coast very quickly to take advantage of the best wind conditions.

The wine growing region of Lanzarote is called La Geria and is unique in that it’s built on volcanic soil. The vines are planted on large holes in the ground to protect them from the wind and create a unique micro climate where moisture from the night time air is collect and used to feed the vine.

This is a time-consuming operation as all must be done by hand, and the vineyards require a lot of space per vine. As a result, the vineyards are limited in their production so quality is the name of the game!
